Following the surprise announcement of their appearance at Japan Expo Paris this year, the idol group Maneki Kecak took some time out of their busy schedule to answer our questions. We invite you to discover or rediscover them in this exclusive interview.

Congratulations on your first day at Japan Expo. How did this first performance go?

Miyauchi Rin: It was our first time in Europe, but French fans still showed up and even cheered for us in Japanese! We were very happy about that, and it made us want to come back here again someday.

You also held your very first autograph session in Paris. How was this encounter with the fans?

Nakagawa Miyu: The fans really surprised us because they came to see us wearing our group’s T-shirts and bringing our official goods. Many of them also spoke to us in Japanese, so we were really happy!

Were you able to speak a little French? Can we have a demonstration?

Matsushita Leona: (in French) “Bonjour! Nous sommes Maneki Kecak, ça va?!” (laughs)

Your next big step will be your concert at Nippon Budokan in September. And after that? What are your goals?

Fujikawa Chiai: We truly have the honor of performing at Nippon Budokan this coming September. We are a little nervous, but also very happy. After that, we would like to begin a new chapter in our career, to meet fans around the world, and perhaps even collaborate with other groups!

You probably also tried some French food. What did you like best?

Fukase Mio: We had pizza in Paris (editor’s note: even though that is not French!), and we were surprised because it was so much bigger than what you usually find in Japan. It was really delicious, and we want to come back to try more French and European dishes.

It was short, but we would like to thank Maneki Kecak and their management for giving us a little of their time for this interview. The five members showed all their confidence on stage for the very first time in Europe, and the fans were delighted!

The five members also wanted to leave a message for you ahead of their special concert at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo on September 24.
