Cute from the Root, Born to Shine

Let’s continue our exploration of the world of Japanese idols. Today, we turn our attention to Root mimi, a group under PLATINUM PIXEL.
Composed of seven members, the group made its debut on May 31, 2025, during their first live performance at Shinagawa The Grand Hall.
Before diving into the group itself, let’s take a quick look at the background of this veteran agency in the idol industry.

7人組で構成されるこのグループは、2025年5月31日、品川・The Grand Hallで行われた初のワンマンライブでデビューを果たしました。
グループそのものについて触れる前に、まずはアイドル業界でベテランといえるこの事務所の歩みを少し振り返ってみましょう。

You’re probably familiar with Up-Front (producer of the Hello! Project groups), AKS (former agency behind the iconic AKB48 and their sister groups), or the phenomenon born from ASOBI SYSTEM with the KAWAII LAB groups (FRUIT ZIPPER, CANDY TUNES, SWEET STEADY). But while perhaps more modest than these giants, PLATINUM PRODUCTION has steadily established itself over the years within the Japanese idol landscape.

The company is divided into several branches, though two in particular are especially well-known in the idol world.
The first, PLATINUM PASSPORT, currently produces only BAND-MAID, the internationally renowned group whose world is directly inspired by hardcore metal. However, this branch experienced its golden age in the past, notably with the flight-attendant-themed idols PASSPO☆ (2010–2018, who even performed in France at Japan Expo 2013) and the mature, sexy group predia (2010–2022). Other groups under its wing included Puchi PASSPO☆, 3min, and most notably PALET (2012–2017), which left behind iconic songs for fans, such as Believe in Yourself.

ハロー！プロジェクトのグループを手掛ける アップフロント、伝説的なAKB48やその姉妹グループを育てた AKS、そして ASOBI SYSTEM 発の現象的な存在である KAWAII LAB.（FRUIT ZIPPER、CANDY TUNES、SWEET STEADY）などは、きっとご存じの方も多いでしょう。こうした大手と比べると規模はやや控えめかもしれませんが、PLATINUM PRODUCTION は長年にわたり、日本のアイドルシーンにしっかりとその存在感を示してきました。

同社はいくつかの部門に分かれていますが、その中でも特にアイドル界で知られているのは2つの部門です。
ひとつは PLATINUM PASSPORT。現在は世界的に人気を誇る BAND-MAID だけを手掛けていますが、かつては黄金期を迎えていました。代表的なのは、キャビンアテンダントをコンセプトにしたアイドル PASSPO☆（2010〜2018／2013年にはフランス・Japan Expoに出演）、そして大人でセクシーな魅力を持つ predia（2010〜2022）。そのほかにも ぷちぱすぽ☆ や 3min、そしてファンにとって象徴的な楽曲「Believe in Yourself」を残した PALET（2012〜2017）などが活動していました。

The second branch, responsible for Root mimi, is called PLATINUM PIXEL and is currently the most active. It produces groups such as Peel The Apple, Tera Tera, SUPER VENUS, and even SILENT SIREN. It also managed 26-ji no Masquerade, active from 2016 to 2022.

And since we’re on the topic of Peel The Apple and SUPER VENUS, let’s take advantage of this perfect transition to return to today’s main subject: Root mimi!

もうひとつは PLATINUM PIXEL と呼ばれる部門で、こちらが現在もっとも活発に活動しており、Peel The Apple、テラテラ、SUPER VENUS、そして SILENT SIREN などを手掛けています。また、2016年から2022年まで活動していた 26時のマスカレイド の制作も担当していました。

そして Peel The Apple や SUPER VENUS の名前が出たところで、本日の主役である Root mimi に話を戻しましょう！

So, what’s the connection with Peel The Apple and SUPER VENUS? Their producer and member: Kurosaki Nanako.
An original member of Peel The Apple since their debut on July 16, 2020, she left the group on December 31, 2024. In the meantime, she joined a new PLATINUM PIXEL project called PLATINUM Princess, which eventually led to the formation of SUPER VENUS, a group that debuted at the Tokyo Idol Festival 2024.
Right after leaving Peel The Apple, however, Kurosaki Nanako nurtured an ambition greater than simply continuing her idol career in a new group: she wanted to produce her own group.

その答えは、プロデューサーでありメンバーでもある黒嵜菜々子にあります。

彼女は2020年7月16日のデビュー以来、Peel The Apple のオリジナルメンバーとして活動してきましたが、2024年12月31日にグループを卒業しました。その間、PLATINUM PIXEL の新プロジェクト PLATINUM Princess に参加し、このプロジェクトが後に SUPER VENUS の結成につながります。SUPER VENUS は2024年の TOKYO IDOL FESTIVAL でデビューを果たしました。

そして Peel The Apple を去った直後、黒嵜菜々子は単に新しいグループでアイドル活動を続ける以上の大きな夢を抱いていました。
――それは、自分自身の手でグループをプロデュースすることでした。

But who exactly is Hazuki-chan? She is Tanda Hazuki, also a member of Root mimi, but best known for her past idol career, particularly as part of the group palet, mentioned in the first part of this article. She is also active as a voice actress, having voiced Miyoko Hashiba in Remake Our Life and Mana Sumida in BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!!.

では、その「はづきちゃん」とは誰なのでしょうか？
彼女は 反田葉月。Root mimi のメンバーであると同時に、この記事の前半でも触れたグループ「palet」出身の元アイドルとして特に知られています。さらに、声優としても活動しており、『ぼくたちのリメイク』の「橋場美世子」や、『BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!!』の「純田まな」を演じています。

• Kurosaki Nanako (黒嵜菜々子; Red) — Former member of Peel The Apple, producer of the group
• Tanda Hazuki (反田葉月; Lavender) — Former member of palet, also active in surimi and Lyrical Lily
• Saikawa Mizuki (才川水希; Light Blue) — Former member of Sukiino Drop (under the name Saikawa Mizuki)
• Nukui Yui (貫井夢生; White) — Former member of Cinderella Sengen! (under the name NUU)
• Asahina Rio (朝比奈麗桜; Pink)
• Amamiya Sakura (天宮さくら; Mint Green)
• Odagaki Arisa (小田垣有咲; Orange) — Former member of Shibu3 Project and Peel The Apple

Out of more than 1,000 applicants, 18 finalists were selected, and the final audition process was broadcast on YouTube. At the end of this last stage, five members were chosen, joined by Tanda Hazuki and Kurosaki Nanako herself.

1,000名以上の応募者の中から、18名のファイナリストが選ばれ、最終オーディションの様子はYouTubeで配信されました。この最後のステージの結果、5名のメンバーが選ばれ、さらに反田葉月と黒嵜菜々子自身が加わる形でグループが結成されました。

Kurosaki Nanako stated:

黒嵜菜々子は次のように述べました：

The “Root” in Root mimi carries multiple meanings: “√” (square root), “root,” and “origin,” while “mimi” comes from French, meaning “cute” or “adorable.” The group’s name expresses the idea of being cute from the very root and continuing straight along that path to share it with everyone. The logo was designed by illustrator Rei Katou.

As for the group’s music, it features contributions from Kohei Tsukada, known for composing for idol groups such as =LOVE, as well as the promising young creator Keita Tanaka, who wrote and composed the main theme for both the film and drama adaptations of Oshi no Ko. The choreography is handled by Ran-sensei, famous for creating the dance for YOASOBI’s “Idol,” the opening theme of the Oshi no Ko anime.

Musically, the group adopts a classic yet effective style, drawing inspiration from their predecessors while incorporating all the “cute” elements envisioned by Kurosaki Nanako. Most of their songs, including their signature track “Root mimi,” are currently available only in dance versions on their YouTube channel. However, the group released their first official music video, “Hatsukoi Sparkle,” on July 31—a solid preview of what the group has in store.

Root mimi の「Root」にはいくつかの意味が込められています。「√」（平方根）、「ルート（根）」、そして「起源」を表し、一方「mimi」はフランス語由来で「かわいい」「愛らしい」という意味です。グループ名には、「根本からかわいくあり、その道をまっすぐ進んで皆に届ける」というコンセプトが込められています。ロゴはイラストレーターかとうれい（Rei Katou） が手掛けました。

グループの音楽には、=LOVE などのアイドルグループに楽曲を提供してきた塚田耕平（Kohei Tsukada）や、映画・ドラマ『推しの子』の主題歌を作詞作曲した期待の若手田仲圭太（Keita Tanaka） が参加しています。振付は、アニメ『推しの子』オープニングテーマ「Idol」を手掛けたことで知られる Ran先生 が担当しています。

音楽的には、先輩たちからの影響を受けつつ、黒嵜菜々子が描いたすべての「かわいい」要素を取り入れた、クラシックでありながら効果的なスタイルを採用しています。代表曲「Root mimi」を含むほとんどの楽曲は、現在YouTubeチャンネルでダンスバージョンのみ視聴可能です。しかし、グループは7月31日に初の公式ミュージックビデオ 「初恋スパークル」 を公開し、今後の展開をうかがわせる充実した内容となっています。

With a carefully balanced mix of experienced members and fresh faces in the industry, Kurosaki Nanako seems well supported! In an interview with E.Usen, Hazuki Tanda revealed that after leaving the idol world five years ago, she hesitated to return, fearing fan reactions. However, seeing the dedication of the audition participants convinced her to fully embrace the project.

Among the former idols, Arisa Odagaki joined out of a desire to share the stage with Nanako Kurosaki once again, despite the pressure and anxiety of the auditions. Mizuki Saikawa, who was reflecting on her future, was persuaded by Nanako’s vision and the group’s concept. As for Yui Nukui, she had been looking for a “traditional and pure” idol group after leaving her previous unit, and she found in Root mimi the perfect opportunity to start anew.

経験豊富なメンバーと業界の新顔を絶妙に組み合わせたことで、黒嵜菜々子 は心強い仲間に囲まれているようです！
E.Usenのインタビューで、反田葉月 は、アイドルの世界を離れてから5年が経ち、ファンの反応を心配して復帰をためらっていたと語っています。しかし、オーディション参加者たちの真剣な姿を見て、このプロジェクトに全力で取り組む決意を固めました。

元アイドルの小田垣有咲は、オーディションのプレッシャーや不安を抱えつつも、再び黒嵜菜々子とステージを共有したいという思いから参加。才川水希は自身の将来について考える中で、菜々子が提示したビジョンとグループのコンセプトに納得し参加を決意しました。貫井夢生は、以前のユニットを離れた後、「伝統的で純粋な」アイドルグループを探しており、Root mimi で再スタートする絶好の機会を見つけました。

The group is currently preparing for their very first one-man live, scheduled for October 17 at Ikebukuro 1000CLUB. We hope to attend with BONJOUR IDOL to explore their world!
